MEET THE OWNER - KASSIE MURPHY

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After graduating high school, I made the move to pursue my undergraduate degree at The University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS, my dad's alma mater. After graduating in May 2011, I went on to pursue a career in commercial real estate property management which ultimately led me to Overland Park.

I have always had a passion for helping people look and feel good through fashion. In 2013, I was journaling and prompted myself to answer the question - "what would I do if money wasn't holding me back?". The idea of owning a women's clothing boutique quickly came to mind. I continued on to create a business plan, wrote out my store name “ensemble” and my desire to carry clothing but also goods from local makers to showcase and support other small businesses. Once I started researching the financial side of things, that’s where things ended.

Several years passed and I went on to pursue my Masters Degree at UMKC for Entrepreneurial Real Estate, married my husband Brice in September 2016 and was moving along in my commercial real estate career. Something what missing though and my dreams for a clothing boutique kept nagging at me! I started out slow and opened up my online store in January 2017 to test the waters. I went on to open up within two collective boutiques in Kansas City. I was hooked and couldn’t turn back. That entire year in 2017, I was constantly searching for the perfect spot to put a brick & mortar boutique. I had my sights set on Downtown Overland Park - it was where my husband and I spent lots of evenings and weekends, and we lived right down the street practically.

I remember sitting at my parents house in Houston in December 2017, while we were home for the holidays, and explaining to my mom what I wanted this boutique of mine to look like. I had such big dreams but just thought it was fun to be talking about them out loud, and I don’t think I really knew if it would become a reality or not. I should also mention at the time, I was pregnant with our daughter Teagan - who was due in June 2018.

Returning to Kansas City after the holidays, we returned to the normal hustle of life. I continued to dream about my ideal boutique location. In March 2018, I was driving down Santa Fe Drive in Downtown Overland Park. To my surprise, a storefront showed a “FOR LEASE” sign in the window. I immediately called my husband and asked if I should call to see what it was all about. Even though I had let my dreams run wild, it wasn’t something that was actually in our plan or financial budget at the time. However, I made the call, we somehow made it all happen and with a quick turnaround we opened our doors in May 2018!
